JACKSONVILLE -- The St. Johns Riverkeeper wants to make sure the First Coast doesn't see another algae bloom in the St. Johns River this summer.
"One of the main causes of the algae bloom we had last summer was too much nitrogen, too much phosphorus. And one of the sources is runoff from our yards," says the Riverkeeper's Neil Armingeon.
To reduce toxic runoff, Armingeon is asking everyone with a lawn to switch to a lower-nitrogen fertilizer. He also recommends buying fertilizer products that are "slow-releasing." That too will reduce the nitrogen load that makes its way into the river.
Meanwhile, don't miss "The Green Monster-It Came From the River!" a special program that will air on NBC 12 on Thursday, March 16th at 8pm.
Hosted by former Jaguars player Jeff Lageman, the show will explore the causes of last year's algae bloom and what can be done to prevent another one this year.
