JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Heavy rain drenched Southern Georgia Monday night. Over 3 inches of rain fell West of Waycross in Nahunta. Thunderstorms were heaviest in central Brantley and spread across Glynn and Pierce counties. The rain is much needed is this specific area. Just last week, as the drought in Northeast Florida eased, it worsened to severe levels across South East Georgia. Jacksonville is seeing green with the first rain surplus all year. An amazing record rain over six inches early Monday morning caused flooding at JAX airport. It put the official recording location 1.06 inches above normal for the year, and 7.71 inches above for the month. A weak area of low pressure over Mississippi has allowed deep tropical moisture to move into the area. This is a necessary ingredient for heavy rain. Add to this light steering wind aloft, and slow moving drenching downpours are the result. Conditions will be similar Tuesday for more rain during the afternoon.
