ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- Ever think you might be pretty good at something but you just keep it to yourself?
A teenager in Orange Park has been doing that for two years.
Gabe Becker, 18, had been singing in the shower, just as many do, and he thought he sounded pretty good, but said he was too "shy" to share his talents.
Then one day in class last spring at Orange Park High School a friend started singing with his guitar. Becker let loose and he said even the class next door heard him and couldn't believe it.
Turns out Becker, a 150-pound teenager, can sing opera.
But until that moment, he had been known to his friends as a swimmer. He went to state competition. He also was a new Navy recruit working hard to prepare for military service.
Now, fellow church members Mel and Sonny Calvert, a couple with years of experience in the music and entertainment industry, have taken Becker under their wings.
He and his family attend Mary Queen of Heaven Parrish and the choir members were amazed when they heard Becker, and he is just beginning voice lessons with Mel Calvert. It's all brand new to Becker, who doesn't even read music yet.
The Calverts teach music and Mel Calvert said Becker's tenor voice just blew him away. Becker's dad said maybe his son will sing in the military at the White House some day.
Friends and family are excited about Becker's newly discovered talent. They are cheering him on and hoping maybe the First Coast will have a famous singer someday.
