NEW YORK (AP) -- Wall Street closed the books on October with a decline. A busy week looms for investors, testing whether the recent volatility will continue.

In the latest session, the Dow fell 250 to close at 9,713. The S&P was down 30 to 1,036. And the Nasdaq shed 52 points to 2,045.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index and the Nasdaq composite index ended with losses for October, breaking a streak of seven straight months of gains. The Dow was flat for the month.

In Asia, most major stock markets were down around 2 percent, after Wall Street's Friday losses and word that lender CIT group is filing for bankruptcy protection. The Shanghai Composite index was the only major market in positive territory, up more than 2 percent.
