NEW YORK (AP) -- Stock prices closed mixed Tuesday, after two straight days of declines.
Between surging energy stocks, and the news from IBM that it would beef up its stock buyback program, the Dow finished with a gain of 14 points to 9,882. The S&P fell nearly 4 to 1,063. The Nasdaq shed 26 points to 2,116.
Two stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange.
Bond prices rose after strong demand at a government debt auction, signaling that investors are still seeking what they think is relative safety.
