BRUNSWICK, GA -- Studies have shown students who play a musical instrument do better in school. A band director in Brunswick makes sure his students work just as hard on their grades as they do in his band class. John Birge is our Teacher of the Week.

Students in John Birge's band class at Brunswick High School work hard to be the best musicians. Their band director works just as hard.

Birge took over as band director four years ago, and in that time he has doubled the number of students now taking band; and they have won many honors, including straight superiors at a competition this past weekend.

"We do work hard in here and I think they learn the value of hard work, self-discipline and what it means to work as a team," said Birge.

The marching band requires practice twice a week after school, attendance at all football games and travel to competitions. His students don't seem to mind. "There are certain requirements to be in band and he pushes you to do your best in everything you do," said student Alyssa Bell.

He commands discipline and he gets it. Senior trombone player Taylor Hinson adds, "I love Mr. Birge. He's been my all time favorite teacher. He really cares about his students. If you ever need help he's always open."

Birge played trumpet in the marching band at Florida State University, and was selected in "Who's Who Among America's Teachers." In his band class is where he's really making a difference in the lives of so many of his students.

"When you have someone who really wants you to do good in life, you don't want to let them down. You want to keep trying to do your best," said student Lindsey Smith.

The parent who nominated Birge for Teacher of the Week described him as a dedicated teacher, a fantastic band director and a great person.
