NEW YORK (AP) -- The stock market managed a mixed finish after two days of gains. The Dow fell nearly 6 points to 9,726. The S&P gained 3 points to 1,058. And the Nasdaq rose 7 to 2,110.
On tap today, retail chains report their September sales numbers. They'll be closely watched ahead of the holiday shopping season. Also today, the Labor Department releases new unemployment claims.
Asian markets were modestly higher in Thursday trading.
