DETROIT (AP) -- U.S. auto sales fell sharply last month. It appears to be something of a hangover from this summer's Cash for Clunkers program.
General Motors and Chrysler posted the biggest slowdowns during the month, while Hyundai was the sole winner among big carmakers, reporting a 27 percent rise in sales from a year earlier.
GM's sales plunged 45 percent compared to a year earlier. Chrysler's decline was 42 percent.
Ford had the smallest decline of the major manufacturers, with a drop of 5 percent.
The good news for consumers is that incentives are becoming sweeter as manufacturers try to lure people to showrooms.
