JACKSONVILLE, FL -- A routine traffic stop that ended in police gunfire on Thursday claimed the life of 44-year-old Robert Louis Johnson.
Assistant Chief Ron Lendvay detailed events that led up to Officer T.M. Burnley firing three shots after he saw Officer C. M. Jones being dragged by the car driven by Johnson.
"They went from verbal commands to attempting to restrain him physically to using a taser. At that point in time, he (Johnson) was able to break free from the officers," said Lendvay.
Johnson, according to police, was pulled over for a traffic violation by Jones with a records check showing Johnson was driving on a suspended license.
"The shots were fired by the officer who was on foot trailing the car," said Lendvay.
Lendvay says Jones suffered minor injuries.
Thursday's police involved shooting was the 11th this year.
