JACKSONVILLE, FL -- When the Singers by the Sea are in perfect harmony, it means their eyes are on one person.
"They laugh about it but I tell them to watch me because I might be doing something different," says Schumann.
Becky Schumann is doing something different from teaching, she's directing the Singers by the Sea, a singing group made up of senior citizens.
"I have such a committed group of singers," Schumann says.
English is her college degree, but music is her interest. Schumann says it started when her father, a methodist minister, would have her sing in church.
"Very often he would drag us around and we would sing, me and my sister, and I sang in college."
So for two decades, she's directed the Singers by the Sea. She started with 16 voices, today it is more like sixty.
"We do 16-18 concerts a season."
Schumann says the concerts bring joy to many in nursing homes and retirement communities.
"They're just getting better day by day."
Her love for the Singers by the Sea resonates among friends and family alike. Schumann is humble, compassionate and committed.
"It is so much fun for me. It is not work at all and I have such a good time with my singers."
Did I say she's also a grandmother who is shining her light of love and joy on her grandchildren? A light that keeps getting brighter.
"I'm not tired, oh no. Until it is no more fun for me and I can't imagine that happening anytime soon."
For her tireless service and enduring love for what she does, we are proud to salute Becky Schumann as one of 12 Who Care.
