JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Mac McCampbell is on his Friday mail run.
"It's not even a bill. We don't let bills come over here," says McCampbell.
He's been walking the halls of St. Vincent's Medical Center for twenty-two years.
Mac does more than deliver the mail. He does something for patients that can be hard to come by in a hospital.
"Listen a lot," says McCampbell. "Let them tell you what they want to tell you."
He listens, and says that simple act can help calm a patient's fears. Mac himself has been in their shoes. He's a breast cancer survivor and he knows how it feels to be overwhelmed.
"Well I know how it is ... skeptical."
So Mac offers an ear and a smile. When he's not delivering mail, he's working in the surgery center leading patients through the pre-operative routine that can be so unnerving.
"He always has a smile and Mac is here because he wants to be and that shows. Every patient knows that when he walks into their room he really wants to see them."
When he's not here on Fridays, he's at home in Orange Park refurbishing hundreds of bicycles for needy children. They are handed out each year through the J.P. Hall Christmas party.
So why spend all his free time doing for others?
"The comraderie," says McCampbell.
And does it keep you out of trouble?
"Sometimes."
Mac McCampbell, for all you do for others, we are proud to salute you as one of 12 Who Care.
