FLEMING ISLAND, FL -- Students in Jacqueline Jenkins' American History class heard President Barack Obama talk about personal responsibility in his speech targeted to children and teenagers.

Fleming Island High gave teachers the option whether to make the President's speech part of Monday's lesson plan.

Jenkins called the President's speech "outstanding."

She agreed with the speech that repeated the theme of personal responsibility.

"Work hard and you can succeed," said Jenkins, agreeing with the President, who encouraged young people not be afraid to ask questions, and not to give up on themselves.

Jean Cocco listened to the President's talk and liked what he heard.

"Nothing political at all, just inspirational and educational speech to the students of the nation," said Cocco, who aspires to become President of the United States someday.

School districts across the First Coast gave principals and teachers the option of how to use the President's speech. The noon hour speech did create some problems for teachers since that time of day has students out of the classroom and in the lunch room.
