JACKSONVILLE, FL -- A proposal floated to close City Hall and other public buildings one day a week hit a brick wall as the council's Finance Committee rejected the idea.
The Public Works Department made the recommendation to save the city half a million dollars.
Director Joey Duncan proposed a ten-hour, four-day work week that would allow several public buildings to be closed one day a week.
"I thought it was a good idea; apparently I was wrong," said Duncan after the committee's vote.
Councilwoman Denise Lee was vocal in opposing the idea that she says she knew nothing about.
"I don't even know if that's legal," said Lee, who argued any move to close public buildings should first be aired with the public before any decision is made.
Also in today's action, the Committee voted to reduce the Sheriff's Department's budget by more than $8 million. CLICK HERE for more.
