JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Every child deserves a birthday cake. Some children, though, don't get birthday cakes because their families are going through such tough economic times.

So Hero Central is calling for Hero Bakers. Maybe you can bake a cake so a child can have a tasty and special birthday.

The cake doesn't have to be fancy. Just get a cake mix, if you choose.

A lady named Ann Hassel is our first Hero Baker. She went to firstcoastnews.com and clicked on Hero Central.

Then she clicked on BE A HERO and put her name in that section.

Ann wound up making a Dora the Explorer cake for children at Community Connections.

Watch the video and you'll see how excited the children were. You'll also see the joy all over Ann's face.

Three children, two boys and one girl, got to have a celebration for their birthdays, complete with cake.

One little boy took a bite, grinned, and said, "It's deeelishush!"

Community Connections has 13 locations around the First Coast and the children at each site are from struggling families, many homeless right now.

Without a cake donation, many wouldn't have a birthday celebration.

Ann is hoping more people will volunteer to be Hero Bakers.

Hero Bakers will be coordinated through United Way.

It's easy. Just click on HERO CENTRAL on firstcoastnews.com. Put your name in the BE A HERO section. Someone will contact you by email.
