JACKSONVILLE BEACH, FL -- It is not an official U.S. holiday where we take off work, but for many dog lovers across America, August 26th is "National Dog Day!"
Just ask Shelley Hinson of Jacksonville Beach, who enjoyed the morning with her two-year old pup, Hunter.
"We've enjoyed having our dog and my kids love him and he's had a fun time out here today," said Hinson.
When the sun is shining, and your paws are flying over the grass with your favorite furry friends, EVERY day is a holiday.
But today, pups like Hunter Hinson and his pals at the newly renovated Jax Beach dog park had even more reason to celebrate.
National Dog Day was created by an online community of dog lovers to remind two-legged folks to rescue and adopt.
"It's about reminding people that there are many homeless animals that could really be life-changing for THEIR world themselves," said Leona Sheddan, who is the Director of the Jacksonville Humane Society.
At the 'no-kill' Jacksonville Humane Society, Sheddan says there is a firm belief in the power of love -- expressed through animals.
"You can't change the world. You can't save every dog or every cat. But the ones that you do take home with you, you certainly change their lives and they'll have a life-changing effect on you!"
And that is what happened when two-year-old Hunter was rescued by the Hinson family.
"Happiness, a fun time for the kids. My kids love him to death!"
Shelley Hinson was surprised to learn about National Dog Day, but knows the joy Hunter has brought to her home and kids.
"And that was one of the reasons for getting a dog, so they can have a pet they can enjoy and grow up with -- like I did," said Hinson.
"Animals, and dogs in particular, can enhance the quality of your lives. All children should have the opportunity to grow up with an animal," said Sheddan.
"Every single day -- unconditional love. It's like the first time they've seen you. They don't care what your wearing, they don't care how the house is decorated, they just want the love that you have to give, and all they want to do is make you happy!"
