ATLANTA, GA -- For the first time, Atlanta Police laid out the sequence of events that led up to the murder of World Champion Boxer Vernon Forrest.
They did it by releasing video surveillance from several sources. There is a good chance someone might recognize one of the suspects in the video.
Atlanta Police are asking the public to focus on a four-door sedan that is seen on video from a gas station on McDaniel Street. Forrest was putting air in his tires when the suspect vehicle pulled into the gas station.
Lt. Keith Meadows, Commander of the Atlanta Police Department's Homicide Squad, described the car as a red Pontiac, possibly a G-6, Grand Am or Grand Prix.
The video shows a man get out of the front passenger side of the car while it is parked at one of the pumps. "It's at that point that the suspect gets out of the red Pontiac and walks directly behind Mr. Forrest," said Lt. Meadows.
Lt. Meadows says the suspect robbed Forrest, taking a world championship gold ring and a Rolex watch.
Police say Forrest chased the suspect running south on McDaniel Street across I-20. The suspect turned right onto Fulton Street and ran by an apartment complex.
A camera in the apartment complex captures the suspect running by the front door. A camera at the back door of the apartment building shows the suspect entering through a security gate. The video shows the suspect holding a gun in his right hand and looking directly into the camera.
"At this point we believe that there are some really good images in there and we're hoping that someone will give us a call with the actual identity (of the suspect)," Meadows said.
Forrest lost the chase when the robber turned onto Fulton Street according to police. The apartment's camera shows him wandering across the street pursuing another suspect. At some point he apparently turned his back on the suspect who shot and killed him.
Lt. Meadows thinks as many as four suspects were involved in the robbery and shooting. He is asking anyone who might recognize the suspect or the car to call Atlanta Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS or 404-577-8477.
