MAYPORT, FL -- Thousands lined the docks at Naval Station Mayport for the return of the USS Halyburton and the USS Vicksburg.
The Ticonderoga class missile cruiser Vicksburg was the first to arrive into port shortly after dawn Friday to the cheering, screaming, flag-waving throngs on shore.
Her crew of 400 stood proudly on deck in their dress whites anxiously awaiting the conclusion of a nearly six-month long deployment. The Vicksburg was attached to protect and escort the USS Eisenhower Carrier group in the North Arabian Sea as a base for air operations into Afghanistan.
But on this hot, hazy July morning, it was time to step off the battle grey into the loving arms of mothers, wives, children and friends.
Hearts soared. Tears fell. It was a time of renewal for all, and a scene repeated just a few hours later as the guided missile frigate USS Halyburton also steamed into port.
Many children at the Halyburton dock wore black eye patches with a white skull and crossbones, referencing the crew's critical role in overcoming pirates to rescue the captain of the Maersk cargo ship Alabama, which was taken hostage back in April.
Between the USS Halyburton and the USS Vicksburg, more than 600 sailors and officers are now enjoying liberty with their loved ones.
