GREER, S.C. --South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford says it's time for him to put aside discussions of his extramarital affair and get back to work governing. Sanford told reporters at a news conference Tuesday that he had made a mistake and is working to repair his relationship with his wife. "I made a mistake in life, I've apologized for that mistake, I've said all I'm going to say on that one," Sanford told reporters. "I'm moving forward, I think the people of South Carolina are ready to do so." Several supporters welcomed the Republican with applause. The stop at a Division of Motor Vehicles office in Greer was Sanford's first public appearance since he called his Argentine mistress his "soul mate" during lengthy interviews with The Associated Press. Sanford says he has been trying to repair his relationship with his wife. The couple took a trip together last week, and Sanford says they will travel again later this week with their four sons. When asked by a reporter if the scandal would be a distraction, Sanford said, "Life and the choices that we make begin each day anew, and so it's as much a distraction as you want to make it. I'm going to move on with my life, the question is will you?" He was also asked how hard he would work to restore the trust of the people of South Carolina. "Day at a time process, day at a time process," Sanford responded.
