JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Here's an idea: Start a HERO HAIR group!Get your friends together and start growing your hair now to donate to kids next year or the year after.

It could be a group at school or church or work; just have fun and see who can get to ten inches the fastest!

And if you want to be on TV to inspire others, just email Jeannie Blaylock at jblaylock@firstcoastnews.com. Put "HERO HAIR" on the subject line.

Meanwhile, the numbers are in from this year's Kutting for Kids.

Sunday, July 19, at the Orange Park Mall, we cut folks' hair for free if they could donate ten inches or more.

We collected more than 7,000 inches of hair! That's enough to give 45 children wigs!

The longest ponytail was 26 inches! Some donors have been giving for years, one lady has been giving for five years!

The event was our 10th Anniversary of Kutting for Kids.

We give the hair to Locks of Love, the non-profit group which makes custom wigs for children with alopecia, long-term chemotherapy or severe burns.

A big thanks to Lea Montgomery, Lee Goodnight with Hair by Lee in Orange Park, the Girl Scouts, cheerful clowns, the Orange Park Mall, Marie Moran and her pro photography crew, our terrific musicians and dancers and many others.

A special thanks to our stylists who cut and cut for hours with love and enthusiasm.

If you donated hair this year, please know you are a HERO to a child tired of being bald and often teased at school.

Over the years we've watched the wigs revolutionize children's lives.
