TAMPA, FL -- Three years after her mother's death, Cathy Manzano Jones says she finally finds closure.
Kenneth Delmar Stewart pleaded guilty to five counts of DUI manslaughter and two counts of serious bodily injury. In return, the judge sentenced him to 25 years in jail, plus 10 years probation.
The deadly accident happened the night before Manzano Jones' wedding. Her mother and four other relatives were on their way home from the airport on the night of April 21, 2006 around 3 a.m. Police say Stewart was driving intoxicated with a .12 blood alcohol level and ran a red light, hitting the Mercedes carrying the women. The bride's mother died at the scene.
During today's sentencing, the victims' families spoke of their loved ones and how Stewart's decision that night to drink and drive changed their lives forever. Stewart apologized to the family in court and said he wished he could have apologized the day of the accident, but his attorney advised him not to.
Stewart also told the family they need to move on with their lives and get past this. Stewart said he understands their loss; not long after the accident, his 4-year-old son drowned in a swimming pool.
Despite their loss, Manzano says she feels sorry for Stewart, but "I can't forgive yet, not yet."
Manzano says she went on with her wedding in honor of her mother and the others that died. She says it's what her mother would have wanted. While the last three years have been difficult, she says her family keeps her strong.
