JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Behind the razor sharp wire at the Juvenile Detention Center was a riot involving more than 30 inmates.

The kids were tearing the building apart. The JDC staff called JSO for help. Patrol and corrections officers responded.

"They were breaking the sprinkler system. Officers were informed they (inmates) had weapons and they went in and took control," says FOP President Nelson Cuba.

Cuba says more than $50,000 in damage was done by the inmates.

According to a JSO internal affairs investigation, the riot was recorded on video. JSO says that video revealed a bigger problem.

The internal affairs report notes that one corrections officer was seen "using a closed fist to strike a restrained inmate in the head." Another one was "observed kicking a restrained inmate in his torso..."

The report goes on to say that both inmates did not appear to be offering any type of resistance.

All four corrections officers involved have been fired. They are K. Brown, Sr., C.D. Woods, J.M. Verwey II, J. Luyando, Jr.

"We disagree with the firing. To us, as you look at the video, there's some minor incidents. I don't see excessive force to terminate these individuals."

Cuba says the officers should have some type of disciplinary action taken against them, but not termination.

Cuba says the FOP plans to fight the terminations.

Sheriff John Rutherford was unavailable for comment about the case.
