TAMPA, FL --A young girl died at the hospital after being pulled from the water at Cyrus Greene Park Pool in Tampa.

Tampa Police say 11-year-old Britney Mills was swimming in the pool when a lifeguard noticed her at the bottom of the deep end. The lifeguard jumped in and pulled her out of the water.

"When I got to the windows, the lifeguards were doing CPR," said witness Angel Morales, 14. "(The lifeguard) was hitting her chest and everything. Then they got a tube and started doing CPR with the tube."

A TPD officer was conducting a safety check at the pool as the lifeguard was pulling Britney out, and assisted the lifeguard in performing CPR until Tampa Fire Rescue arrived on the scene.

The child was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in serious condition, but she died a short time later.

"The initial review shows there was no horseplay, everyone was behaving," said Andrea Davis with the Tampa Polcie Department. "Everyone was swimming nicely."

Police say there were 30 to 40 kids in the pool area at the time of the drowning, and there were three lifeguards on duty. The American Red Cross standards call for one lifeguard for every 25 children. The maximum occupancy of the pool is 63.
