KINGS BAY, GA -- A fire at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay has closed the indoor gun range.
Base spokesman Ed Buczek says the fire that started Monday afternoon took two hours to bring under control and was completely put out in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.
Instructors and sailors who were using the range were safely evacuated with no injuries reported.
Buczek says the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The base spokesman could not say whether a fire suppression system installed in the two-year-old building worked.
Fire departments from neighboring St. Marys and Camden were called to assist base firefighters in bringing the gun range fire under control.
