JACKSONVILLE, FL -- One group is making its presence known on the First Coast by helping keep neighborhoods safe.
The Guardian Angels are opening a chapter in the River City on Wednesday.
Their headquarters, located on the Southside, will do more than just help fight crime. Their goal is to help kids stay off the streets and out of trouble.
Ruben Torres, a Guardian Angel, decided to move to Jacksonville a couple of months ago. He wanted to start a local chapter and set up a gym for kids to go to.
"The goal is to reach out to these kids get them involved in programs where they can have a better future," says Torres. The group's headquarters will also double up as a gym, which is open to the public. Kids and adults are welcome to learn martial arts and combat techniques.
Kids will also pick up a few lessons on gang awareness. Kids can also just stop by the center to watch TV or do their homework. The Guardian Angels say their doors are always open for those who need help.
The crime fighters, known for their trademark red berets, will also recruit and train new Guardian Angel members at the gym.
The group plans to start routine walks in troubled Jacksonville neighborhoods next month.
The gym is located on the Southside at 8116 Old Kings Road South, which is off Baymeadows Road.
Their number is 904-525-2077.
