JACKSONVILLE, FL -- A new, tougher law on drivers goes into effect in Florida Tuesday. It's a crack down on those who do not wear seat belts.
Drivers can get a ticket for almost a hundred dollars under the primary seat belt law. Currently, police can only give a driver a ticket for not wearing a seat belt if the driver is stopped for another violation.
Florida Governor Charlie Crist signed this bill into law earlier this year. He and other officials believe it will save lives. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates the new seat belt law will save 124 lives and prevent more than 1,700 serious injuries every year in Florida.
The law also applies to adults in the front passenger seat. If they are not buckled up, they could face a $30 fine.
So, be safe and buckle up. If you don't, starting Tuesday, it will cost you.
