JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Jaylen Baker is being remembered as a 7-year-old who loved to read, play games and earn straight A's in school.
His dad, Andre Baker, says Jaylen was not a good swimmer. Sunday night the second grader died after being found by his dad in the deep end of a swimming pool at the Cimarron Apartments in Arlington.
"I just could not believe it. I just had seen him, I turned my head for may be a minute or so. He was at the bottom of the pool," said Baker, who jumped in the pool and gave his son CPR before rescue teams arrived.
Baker says his son died in his arms.
The Baker family was attending a birthday party at the complex. Jaylen's dad says children were in the pool with adults on the deck keeping an eye on the young swimmers.
Jaylen's grandmother, Carolyn Jones, says it all happened so fast.
"One moment I saw him, the next moment...our lives had changed just that fast," said Jones, who attended the birthday party for her brother.
"If you cannot get in the pool, don't let them get in the pool, get in the pool with them," said Baker, who lost his youngest son.
The family is busy now making funeral arrangements. Jaylen leaves behind his mom and dad, plus two older brothers.
If you would like to help with funeral expenses, the family has set up an account at Compass Bank.
