JACKSONVILLE, FL -- There were plenty of emotional goodbyes and teary eyes as students left for the summer from Wesconnett Elementary School.
After 82 years, the school is being closed, with one reason being its low enrollment -- 270 students.
"I just consider this my second home," said Ernestine Jackson, who has been at the Westside school since 1967.
"I don't know what I am going to do with myself now."
Cindy Bergesch was in the pickup line on the last day. She had two children who attended Wesconnett Elementary and hoped her grandson would have the same opportunity.
"I would like for him to go here," said Bergesch, who praised the work of the teachers and the principal.
Custodian Grew Bryant made a point of hugging students near the front door as the bell rang for last day dismissal.
"I will miss all of you," she said, waving her hand.
