JACKSONVILLE, FL -- More than 30 summer camps in targeted neighborhoods are getting Jacksonville Journey crime fighting and crime prevention dollars to assist families in caring for their children.
The Jacksonville Children's Commission says the Jacksonville Journey program has kicked in a million dollars to support summer camps.
"We ask that the providers charge no more than $10 per week, per child," said Shandra Warlick, who heads up the summer camp program.
Warlick says children who receive free or reduced lunches or have a special need qualify for the camps.
Dotceal Walker is gearing up for her summer camp, which is held in the Spanish Oaks Apartments in Arlington.
"Without these camps, the kids would be running around the complex getting into trouble," said Walker, whose camp is getting Jacksonville Journey funding.
The Jacksonville Children's Commission has prepared a list of 81 camps located in all parts of the city.
Parents who are interested are asked to contact the camp providers directly. Some camps, according to the Children's Commission, still have openings.
