JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Former professional tennis player MaliVai Washington is a long-time First Coast resident, and his foundation has been serving hundreds of underprivileged kids from this area for more than a decade.
With his 40th birthday just around the corner, some of the foundation's staffers arranged for an early surprise party for Mal on Tuesday morning.
Washington arrived at the foundation's headquarters on the Northside under the impression that he was going to do an interview with Dan Hicken.
Midway through this "set-up" interview, one of the staffers came into the room and requested that Mal visit with some parents who had assembled in a seperate room for an orientation about an upcoming summer program for the foundation.
