JACKSONVILLE, FL -- The annual fee to register a car or truck is going up in Florida by 35%, on average.

Florida lawmakers signed off on the fee hike to generate more cash for the state. The increase kicks in on September 1.

Duval County Tax Collector Mike Hogan says there are four pages of fee increases; some are a few dollars, others considerably higher.

"The average sized car typically you pay about $35 for, tag, title registration goes up to $57," said Hogan, who expects to hear from people who make the trip to the tag office.

The biggest fee increase is for a new vehicle. That charge is jumping from $100 to $225.

Tonya Wells, who just renewed her tag, paying $80, hadn't heard of the fee increase approved by lawmakers.

"It's ridiculous," said Wells, who doesn't look forward to paying more to keep her truck on the road.

Another fee that will hit the wallets of drivers is the increased cost for a driver license. The initial license will go up by $21, with renewals costing $28 more. Those higher fees will be charged starting September 1.
