JACKSONVILLE, FL -- A stormwater and solid waste fee will be arriving in the mail to nearly 270,000 local homeowners this week.

The fees were adopted last year to help pay for drainage projects and offset the cost of garbage collection.

Patricia Polite is seeing major construction work around her home in Lincoln Villas designed to move stormwater away from homes.

"It's going down now...you cannot walk over there, so muddy," said Polite, who will see a retention pond dug out right next to her home on Waxwing Avenue.

The city says the average homeowner can expect to receive a $111 bill this week. The stormwater fee is $60, and $51 goes to offset the cost of garbage collection.

The Public Works Department has $33 million in drainage projects currently underway. Those projects which are identified by neighborhoods include: Hugh Edwards, Lincoln Villas, Moncrief Creek, Pine Forest and the Putnam-Hudnall area.

John Pappas, Deputy Director of Public Works, says this year the city expects to collect $34 million for drainage projects and maintenance.

"It allows us, number one, to maintain what we have and to make improvements...and to also tackle the bigger drainage problems we have," said Pappas.

Right now, the city has nine different drainage projects in design with more under review.
