ST PETERSBURG, FL -- On a rainy road full of traffic, Kelly Johnston found herself making an unexpected stop.

"This is where I saw the baby right there," she said.

A 9-month-old baby who was wearing nothing but a diaper was sitting on First Avenue North and 37th Street in St. Petersburg.

"As soon as the light turned green I pulled off and I saw a car swerve in front of me real fast and then I noticed there was a baby sitting in the bike lane right there," she said.

She pulled over right away.

"Just scooped the baby up and held him and he held on to me," explained Johnston.

She looked around hoping to see the child's parents. She approached several people in the neighborhood, but no one knew who the baby belonged to. So, she came up with a plan.

"I just drove straight, I didn't know where I was going and I saw lights, I saw fire trucks so I pulled over," she said.

She handed the baby over to paramedics who were in the area responding to another call.

"The baby kinda didn't want to let go of me and he was a really cute baby too so it was hard to let him go, but it happened so fast and I knew that that was the best place to leave the baby," she explained.

She knew the baby was safe so she rushed off to her appointment. Later that night, she couldn't stop thinking about the child.

"I kept thinking I hope the baby is okay, I wonder what happened to the baby," she said.

We learned that the police came back to the neighborhood and found the baby's grandparents, who were babysitting the boy while his parents were at work.

They say he snuck out when one of his siblings opened the door. Now he's off the street and back home where he belongs.

"I just kinda released like Oh my God I can't believe that just happened, that I just found a baby and my girlfriend said no you saved the baby," said Johnston.
