JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Elvis made it famous. But now the students at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary have their own version of singing, "You ain't nothing but a hound dog." And it's a great way to motivate everybody to get up and active.
There's no way in words on a website we can show you the pep at Martin Luther King. Click on the video. The school might just get you humming' the custom version all day!
The goal, of course, is to FIGHT THE COUCH, our new project to tackle childhood obesity. Students at MLK Elementary even dressed up in "good" foods and "not-so-good" foods. Mr. Cherry Pie seemed to get the most reaction. Students admitted they love cherry pie. But nearby the orange and the rest of the fruit and vegetable gang reminded everyone to focus on the healthy choices. Applause to the creative spirit at MLK Elementary, a fine arts magnet school. The principal told her students she expects the best from them and they always respond. FIGHT THE COUCH is actually a contest which runs through May 22. The four teams with the most activity minutes win big prizes. Thousands of First Coast kids are participating. Teacher, don't forget to log in your team's activity minutes. Just look under HEALTH at the top of our web site. Then you'll see "Kick It Up First Coast."
