JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Michael Joseph is the past president of the Professional Photographers Society of North Florida.

Joseph says when the society hears of a wedding photographer leaving his clients high and dry, it gives the industry a black eye.

"We cringe," says Joseph.

The Guild, reacting to the recent complaints about Kevin Winter Photography, says it is time to remind consumers what to do in hiring a wedding photographer.

"First, you should see if he is a member of a professional organization," says Joseph.

He says then make sure that his personality is compatible to yours, and what he has to offer is within your budget.

Then check the photographer's references.

"Ask to see samples of his work," says Joseph. "And talk with references," he adds.

Joseph is a portrait photographer and says his payment terms are usually fifty percent down, fifty percent when it's finished.

But he says with wedding photographers, it is standard to have the contract paid in full before the wedding.

He says beware of a photographer who is promising a lot.

"If he's going to give you this much for this little, something is going to catch up with a photographer like that," says Joseph.

He says the benefit of using a professional who is a member of the Guild or a professional organization is there is an emergency backup network.

"When we see one of our members in trouble, due to an illness or injury, we can step in and try to finish the job," says Joseph.

He says the guild is trying to maintain the integrity of the industry and make sure that the customer is happy with the product.
