TALLAHASSEE, FL -- A House-passed measure to loosen Florida's class size limits has failed. The 2010 ballot proposal (HJR 919) never came to a vote in the Senate as the Legislature finished its non-budget business Friday. Voters in 2002 passed a state constitutional amendment that will limit classes to no more than 18 to 25 students depending on grade level beginning with the 2010-11 school year. Opponents say the limits are too costly and divert money from other needs. The House proposal that would have cut those costs by requiring the limits be met only on a school average basis. The sponsor, Rep. Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel, said he plans to try again next year.
