JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Gustav, Ike and Paloma have joined Katrina, Ivan, and others in infamy.

The World Meteorological Organization's hurricane committee has decided to retire the names of those three deadly storms from the 2008 season.

Hurricane names rotate on a six-year cycle, meaning Gustav, Ike and Paloma would have been used again if conditions warranted in 2014.

However, when named storms are particularly destructive or deadly, their names are retired.

Gustav struck Haiti, Cuba and Louisiana, killing 112 people. The storm also caused over $4 billion in damages in Louisiana.

Ike was a quick-forming category 4 storm that struck in the southern Bahamas, Cuba and Texas, killing over 100 people, including 20 in the United States. Ike caused nearly $20 billion in damage in the U.S. as well.

Paloma was also a category 4 storm, the second-most-powerful November hurricane on record. Paloma struck Cuba, and the Cuban government claims that more than 1,400 homes were destroyed.

Gonzalo, Isaias and Paulette will join the rotation in 2014 in their place.
