JACKSONVILLE, FL -- The Jacksonville Humane Society received a big donation from one of their former volunteers.
Jack Hatfield wanted to do something to help the animals after he was gone; so he left a lot of money to make sure the animals were taken care of when he died.
"Every donation means one more thing we can do for the animals," said Danya Parks-Freel of The Jacksonville Humane Society.
Hatfield loved to volunteer there. He would walk the dogs and play with the cats. "What he wanted to do was feel like somebody who needed him, got some attention," said friend Ronnie Pack.
Hatfield died in January of 2008 but he did not forget about the animals he so dearly loved. In his will, he left more than $37,800 to the Jacksonville Humane Society. His friend Ronnie Pack was more than happy to present the check.
"Jack had a big heart and he cared about all of those who couldn't take care of themselves. He didn't forget about the Humane Society."
The generous donation given by the former volunteer will help the animals get the care and help they need.
"He lived just long enough to see the Jacksonville Humane Society had that large fire and all those animals were killed and he wanted to help rebuild the Humane Society and wanted to take care of the animals that were here," said Pack.
2 years ago this month, a massive fire broke out at the Humane Society. More than 70 firefighters fought back flames as high as 30-feet. Damages to the shelter were estimated at more than a million dollars.
The Humane Society is hoping to rebuild and this large donation from a former volunteer will certainly help.
