JACKSONVILLE, FL -- She has three children of her own. That's just one reason -- but a huge one -- Brenda Deyamport wants to stay alive.
Brenda found a lump the size of a lemon while doing Buddy Check 12.
She was concerned because she hadn't had a mammogram in years and she knew she couldn't pay for one.
So she called our new M-Line, the First Mammogram Hotline on the First Coast.
Brenda received a free mammogram.
Her mammogram results alerted doctors at Baptist that more tests needed to be done.
The result? Brenda has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Her doctors are working with chemotherapy to shrink the tumor so they can operate.
Brenda is nervous, she says, but grateful she got a free mammogram.
And she's happy she did Buddy Check 12 in the first place to find her lump.
Now Brenda is relying on her faith in God. "He will see you through it. I have no doubt," she says.
First Coast News anchor Jeannie Blaylock, working with Komen North Florida for the Cure, set up the hotline in October to make sure all women could get mammograms, no matter their financial status.
Folks all over the First Coast pinned together Buddy Bucks to help Jeannie launch the hotline.
Donations have already topped more than $70,000, mostly in one-dollar bills.
More than 1,300 calls have come into the hotline, which is answered personally by a team of trained workers.
If you can't afford a mammogram, the M-Line number is: 1-877-9-MY-MAMO.
