ATLANTIC BEACH, FL -- Greg Selby lives off Mayport Road. He has been in the same house since 1962.
"I like it here," says Selby. What he doesn't like is the new orders from City Hall.
"They want us to remove our fences," says Selby.
Selby says in March, he and his neighbors were notified that their fences are in violation of the Commercial Corridor Development Standards.
They have 90 days to comply or face a $500-a-day fine for the violation.
Selby says, "I am not happy at all."
Selby says he has had a fence since May, 1972, and over the years it has kept vehicles from slamming into his home.
He feels that his fence should be grandfathered in under the new rules.
Assistant City Manager David Thompson says the residents have a recourse.
"They can appeal to the commission, either on a case-by-case basis or as a group," says Thompson.
Thompson says the commission has the latitude of addressing the residents' concerns.
"The commission can give them a grace period; there are a number of possibilities," says Thompson.
Selby says they just want City Hall to leave them and their fences alone.
The residents plan to petition City Hall.
