JACKSONVILLE, FL -- When she was born, her parents were told, she may never walk; but now at the age of 14, she is a top track athlete for Matthew Gilbert Middle School and she is our Student of the Week.
Every day after school it's time for track practice for 14-year-old Jazmin Bush with the track team. They stretch, do drills and run around the track. She has worked hard at track and that work has paid off. She is one of the most decorated middle school track athletes in Jacksonville. "I just like to run," said Jazmin.
It's quite amazing for a child, who was born with a serious medical condition. At one day old, she had surgery and her parents were told she may never walk.
"She's a role model for a lot of kids that participate in sports," said Track Coach Michael Holloway.
Her father died when she was just 7; and she's the only one to help take care of her mom who has debilitating migraines. "So I have to make sure she takes her medicine. Cook for her and clean up the house and make sure she is all right," said Jazmin.
All this and she keeps her grades up in school. She is determined to do well in class and on the track. "She's a straight A student. She gets the work done. She's no problem in school. She's the all around perfect kid," said Coach Holloway.
Matthew Gilbert Middle School is the same place the legendary Bob Hayes went to school. Jazmin feels if he can go on to greatness from here; she can too. She hopes to follow in his footsteps and make it someday to the Olympics.
She also wants to become a crime scene investigator when she grows up.
