GREEN COVE SPRINGS, FL -- You have to hand it to Vicki Syken, the music teacher at Charles E. Bennett in Clay County.
She's been watching our Fight the Couch project to tackle childhood obesity.
She's supportive 100%. But, she says, you can't ask kids to rack up activity minutes on bicycles they don't have. Many families can't afford the fun activities other can.
So her idea? Teach the kids fun dances. They can wiggle at home in their rooms or at school in the hall.
Watch the video story. It's refreshing to see the students laughing and moving around with such gusto.
Syken has inspired other teachers at her school to sign up their teams for Fight the Couch. The teams have clever names, as you'll hear in the story.
Has your class registered? The contest begins Monday, April 6th. But you can register at any time.
During Spring Break make sure your students keep track of how many minutes a day they move around. Anything counts...as long as it's not lying down and doing nothing on the couch!
Fight the Couch is free and it's easy.
The project begins "Kick It Up, First Coast," a First Coast News commitment to fight obesity.
