
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- A former high school football coach who held the state's winningest record for nearly 20 years has died.
Gene Cox died Monday night. He was 74.
A spokeswoman for Beggs Funeral Home in Tallahassee said Tuesday that funeral arrangements had not been completed.
Cox coached 38 seasons, finishing with a record of 313-100-5. He held the wins record until 2004 when Corky Rogers at Bolles High School in Jacksonville passed him.
Cox coached at Jefferson County, Suwannee County, Aucilla Christian and 27 years at Leon High School in Tallahassee. At Leon High School, he won a pair of state championships and sent scores of players to the collegiate ranks.
