MIDDLEBURG, FL -- Two suspects in the attempted murder of a man from Jacksonville appeared in court Friday morning.
38-year-old Lisa Mullis and 39-year-old Darrell Thornton are accused of kidnapping, robbing and stabbing James Waters early Thursday morning.
Both are being held at the Clay County Jail without bond.
The pictures show all that is left of James Waters' 1998 Mitsubishi, but the violent burning of plastic, metal, and duct tape pales in comparison to the overnight violence Waters endured.
The 911 call came in around 3 o'clock Thursday morning to the Clay County Sheriff's Office.
"We got a call of a man covered in blood at the Hardees in Middleburg," said Detective Matt Edmonson.
"Patrol units arrived to find he's been stabbed several times."
The 52-year old Waters told police a female friend invited him to a Middleburg home after midnight, but he says as he entered the home he was hit on the head with a gun, duct-taped, and thrown in his car by the woman and her male accomplice.
"And taken to several banks to withdraw money," said Detective Edmonson.
$300 was withdrawn. Then, police say, Waters was driven to a deserted part of Formen Circle where he was stabbed repeatedly, but managed to escape.
Despite his bleeding heavily, Waters made the mile trek down Blanding Boulevard to the Hardees restaurant.
Waters told the cops he knew his female attacker --and soon she and her alleged accomplice were picked up for questioning. Police spotted one of the suspects just moments before his car was found burning.
Waters was rushed to Orange Park Medical Center where he was treated for his stab wounds.
First Coast News Reporter Kyle Meenan spoke with Waters at his home this afternoon by telephone. Waters was too weak and in too much pain to do an on-camera interview. But he is well aware last night could have been much worse.
Sheriff's Deputy Edmonson agrees.
"In my opinion, they intended to kill him! (He's) --very lucky!"
