ATLANTA, GA -- Georgia lawmakers have again passed a bill aimed at making it easier for military children to change schools.
The legislation, which passed unanimously in the Senate on Monday, would have Georgia adhere to a multistate compact being pushed by the Pentagon.
A measure passed last year that would have had Georgia enter the compact but it was vetoed by Gov. Sonny Perdue who worried it would cost the state an unspecified amount of money.
Military "brats" change schools an average of six to nine times between kindergarten and 12th grade.
Supporters say the multistate agreement making school transitions easier would help not just children but the armed forces as a whole. Difficulties uprooting children are cited as a major reason people leave active duty.
