DETROIT (AP) -- Members of the Obama administration's autos task force have a busy day on tap in the Detroit area.

They will test drive the Chevrolet Volt electric car and tour a Chrysler factory where the Dodge Ram pickup truck is put together. They also will meet with senior General Motors and Chrysler executives -- and with top union officials.

GM and Chrysler are living on $17.4 billion in government loans approved by the Bush administration last year, and they have asked for a total of $39 billion.

Obama appointed the task force to review the automakers' viability plans and decide if they should get additional help.

Some Republican senators in Washington say they'd rather see GM seek Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, allowing it to reorganize.
