JACKSONVILLE, FL -- The oversight committee for Jacksonville Journey met Monday afternoon to discuss the needs of several components of the program at the start of the new year.
Jacksonville Journey is Mayor John Peyton's $30 million plan to reduce crime in the city. Several initiatives are already underway at the start of 2009.
Though this was not the group's first meeting, it transpired more as an organizational meeting than a review of the program's progress.
The committee members went line by line through the plans, discussing the needs that have come up as certain initiatives are put into action.
For example, now that the intramural activities--a new after school opportunity for young people taking place at select city parks-- are underway, the committee is discussing whether transportation is needed to deliver the participants to and from the program.
There's talk of a partnership with JTA, and of exploring available resources at churches and other afterschool programs.
The committee also brought up questions of JSO's role in supporting the non-profit end of the Jax Journey.
One committee member said he would like to know what kind of security presence JSO can provide for the intramural programs, since the sheriff's office is receiving roughly one-third of the $30 million in funding.
As the Jacksonville Journey grows, the committee members are keeping a close watch on what resources are needed, and how to come by them.
