PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL -- We all know about the Players Championship, and hometown hero Fred Funk, who won the tournament in 2005. What we've never seen before is Funk going head to head with his PGA Tour Commissioner, not on the turf -- but on the flat screen.

Commissioner Tim Finchem and Fred Funk led a team of seniors in the inaugural electronic 'Wii-Golf" championship Friday here at The Players Community Senior Center in Ponte Vedra.

Don Blackburn and his wife helped furnish this 10,000 square foot center. Blackburn played Wii on the Funk team.

"We're pleased to see the way the Center is being used. Before, we had a facility with 40, 50, maybe 60 people on a good day, but now, on a day like today we're going to be crowded and with the Holiday coming up...it's a wonderful, wonderful feeling!"

Aside from Friday's virtual golf, the center handles more than a thousand local seniors offering yoga, tai-chi, computer training --even beading classes.

Barbara Dominick, like many of the seniors here, has volunteered for the Players Championship for years. The tournament donated $300,000 to help build this facility -- money many of the senior volunteers perceive as a "thanks" from the Tour for their years of volunteering.

"I was so pleased when this opened, and I think they've done a wonderful job, and of course I think the Players Championship does a wonderful job too!" said Dominick.

Mayor John Peyton's mom, Marilyn, was asked if she was nervous playing with the PGA Tour Commissioner against Fred Funk and his team. She just grinned.

"I didn't feel any pressure at all because I was just doing it for fun. If it had been for a big prize I'd have felt differently!"

And with continuing support and gifts like the $12,000 practice putting green that was installed on the site, the future success of this senior center is assured for years to come.
