JACKSONVILLE, FL -- A Jacksonville Sheriff's Officer, with 12 years on the force, is dead after a crash on State Road 9A.
The incident happened around 3 a.m. on Thursday on 9A near Gate Parkway.
Sheriff John Rutherford with JSO says Officer Christopher Kane was killed in the crash. The 38-year-old leaves behind a wife and two children.
Lt. Bill Leeper with Florida Highway Patrol said the JSO cruiser was heading southbound on 9A near Gate Parkway. There was active construction work in the area and the road was closed to the public.
Sheriff Rutherford says Officer Kane was heading home after work. He was on the portion of 9A closed due to construction. He had stopped to talk to an off-duty officer in the construction zone and then continued south on 9A.
The officer, for an unknown reason, struck a semi-truck with construction equipment that was stopped in the left lane in the construction zone.
The officer was killed on impact.
"It created a terrible scene," said Rutherford. "Officer Kane was very involved in the community, a Pop Warner coach and a good guy."
A portion of S.R. 9A was closed for several hours for the investigation.
All lanes are now open.
