Trends: Back-to-School Fashions

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL -- This year as students had back to school there will be plenty of skinny jeans, layers and preppy outfits. Those are some of the biggest trends for school fashions this year.

Angie Vennerstrom, the assistant general manager at the St. Augustine Premium Outlets says preppy is the big look for elementary age boys and girls.

1st grader Abby Riddle picked a purple stripe sweater over a purple shirt with a floral print from Tommy Hilfiger.

"Mixing prints is big for girls this year," says Vennerstrom.

It's a similar look for elementary school boys. "The preppy look, so having a button up shirt over a t-shirt and a sweater tied around the waist or shoulder," says Vennerstrom.

6th grader Elizabeth (Izzy) Gedis will be wearing two of her favorites, "ballet flats and skinny jeans."

"The skinny jeans are very hot for fall," says Vennerstrom. The tight-designed demin is now found in most clothing stores.

Bright colors in cool accessories such as light weight scarfs are also popular says Vennerstrom.

Middle school boys we'll likely take a more dressed down approach. "They are pretty active and have alot of energy," says Vennerstrom. She recommends sports warm-up suits and shirts with sports teams.

But when they reach high school age, those guys will be layering their clothes, according to fashion experts.

Bartram Trail Senior Matt Jackson chose a graphic t-shirt over a long-sleeve thermal shirt. He says it's a wear to mix it up. "They aren't just bland," says Jackson. "They stand out a little bit."

As for high school girls, Vennerstrom says the jean jackets are back. And so is an older-style pant. "Corduroy is really big this fall," says Vennerstrom. "And it's thin corduroy so it's nice and light weight."

Most stores are focusing their shoes for pre-teen and teenage girls on flats, which are very popular now.
