JACKSONVILLE, FL -- These are the dog days of summer. They can take a toll on our canine friends. But their is relief in sight. It's a frosty treat just for dogs that's quickly becoming a First Coast Trend.
Lindsey Curry gives her two pouches "Frosty Paws", the frozen treat for dogs.
"One of our friends introduced us to Frosty Paws," says Curry. "It was really hot and he said 'you should give your dogs one of these ice cream treats for dogs'. I tried it and the dogs loved it."
Big or small, young or old, it seems all dogs jump at the chance to lick the ice cold treats.
At Bark Avenue Pet Resort on Jacksonville's Northside the canine visitors regularly get the frozen treats.
Bark Avenue Owner Ty Carriere says the frosty paws are another way for pet owners to indulge their animals.
"It's an extra treat to give their pets when they go out of town and it makes them (pet owners) feel good," says Carriere.
When Kennel Tech Heather Mills walks through kennels at Bark Avenue with the cold treats, all the dogs take notice. They are barking and jumping just to get their paws on the frozen dessert.
Some of them lick the circular frozen treat, others roll it around, bite it, whatever it takes to enjoy the cool relief.
"We actually make our own frosty paws at Bark Avenue," says Miller. She typically makes peanut butter or strawberry flavors. But they have experimented too.
"So far I know we've made pumpkin for Thanksgiving," says Miller. "We've made strawberry and peanut butter. And this summer we had an accident and made peanut butter and jelly and the dogs loved that."
The typical recipe at Bark Avenue includes mixing together plain yogurt, peanut butter or fruit, and a little bit of honey.
After mixing the ingredients, they freeze the creation in small round bowls (about the size of cup cake containers).
For those pet owners who prefer to buy their own, Frosty Paws are sold at many grocery stores in "original" or peanut butter flavors. They are kept in the freezer sections.
